A new beginning
What does freedom mean to Tabitha in the book you have read? Which choices become possible because she has money and rank, and which still demand courage?
Two kinds of knowledge
Choose a moment when Tabitha understands a situation better than Wolf, and one when his experience gives him the advantage. How do they respond to each other's expertise?
A title and a reputation
When does Wolf's title open a door that his former occupation would have closed? Does the deference he receives make people more truthful?
The dowager's contradictions
Find a moment when the dowager's behaviour complicates your first impression of her. Does affection make her more generous, or chiefly more selective in her prejudices?
An unconventional household
What makes someone belong in this household? Compare the importance of birth, employment, loyalty, kindness and usefulness.
Trust earned in small ways
Which ordinary action tells you most about a character's reliability? Consider a meal, a conversation with a servant, a promise or an admission of ignorance.
Humour and vulnerability
Which exchange made you laugh? What would be lost if it were removed? Does the humour reveal affection, conceal discomfort or expose a social absurdity?
Respectable appearances
Who benefits when good manners are mistaken for good character? Find a moment when an apparently disreputable person is judged more harshly than a socially acceptable one.
Whose account counts?
Compare how two witnesses are listened to. Does confidence, sex, wealth or employment affect whose version is believed?
Knowledge and concealment
What is the difference between withholding information to protect someone and withholding it to control them? Does the investigation change where you draw that line?
The evidence that changed your mind
Which detail first unsettled your favourite theory? Was it evidence, a character's behaviour or an assumption you realised you had made?
A satisfying solution
Separate three questions: who committed the crime, why it happened, and what should follow. Does the book resolve all three to your satisfaction?
Changing places
Would the same investigation unfold differently if a central character had less money, less social standing or fewer useful friends? Which scene would change first?
Looking across the series
If everyone has read more than one book, which relationship changes most? If you have read only one, which relationship would you most like to follow?
